SECT CPOA SUMMER NEWS LETTER

From: President SECT CPOA

To: All CPOA Members

Greetings:

Well, for those of us that live in New England, it seems spring bypassed us, and we progressed right into summer. As we slowly dry out from all the rain, and enjoy the midsummer warmth, I would like to catch you up on what is happening with our Chapter. I do apologize if some of this is repetitive, but I believe the information bears reprinting. Our Chapter continues to do well, thanks to the hard work or our Chiefs, their spouses and children.

It’s time to start looking ahead to football season and the CPOA concession stand. The concession stand is our chapter's only fundraiser. We have four or five home football games and the Cadet Windjammers Marching Band competition each year. Our success depends on Mother Nature and Volunteers. We can’t control Mother Nature, but we could sure use your help. A winning season helps too. The upcoming home schedule is listed below my signature. Please try to plan on volunteering. It’s not only a chance to help, but also a chance to catch up with friends and enjoy a little camaraderie.

Our Chapter is actively involved in the community. Some of our chapter's volunteer activities, charities, and award presentations are as follows:

-          Our annual Special Olympics softball tournament held at the Academy each August

-          Special Olympic Connecticut qualification games

-          Special Olympic Penguin Plunge

-          CCTI program

-          Presentation of the Cadet Navigation Award

-          Presentation of the OCS Athletics Award

-          Presentation of the Drum Major Award at Windjammers

-          Presentation of the "Spirit of the Chief" at CPO Academy

   Graduation

-          Salvation Army, Hearts Of Bloom for the National Heart Association

-          Red Cross Blood Drive

-          Christmas Toy and fundraiser

-          Toys for the Children's ward at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

-          New London's Local food Kitchens. Local Little League and other youth activities

-          We also support our CPOA National Office by donating to the CCCAF Collage Assistance Fund, the Emergency Relief Fund and the CPOA Building Fund

-          Our local chapter is a member of the Academy's MWR and the Family Assistance Committees.

As you see, we are involved in community and Coast Guard affairs, doing a lot of volunteer work throughout the year. None of these activities would have been a success without the support of the Chiefs and your families. I would like to thank each and every one of you that volunteer. On behalf of the SECT Chapter, thank you FOR A JOB WELL DONE!

The Academy's CMC, MCPO Jeff Creighton, has reported that the new Chiefs Mess is well underway and will be able to start furnishing it soon. It's located in Billard Hall.

Election of SECT Chapter officers will be starting in September. Tentative schedule is as follows:

-          September – Nominations

-          October – Ballots sent out by the end of October

-          November – Counting of Ballots. Completed before November meeting.

We are looking for a chairman for the election committee. This is a two-year term of office, and you must be a SECT chapter member. If there are no nominations, the present BOD will remain in office until relieved or for another term.

The SECT chapter needs to up date its membership roster. We need your help. This is mainly for the active duty chiefs. If you are not receiving the CHIEF Magazine your address needs to be updated with National along with your chapter affiliation. The SECT BOD will be happy to help you. Please let us know.

I will be attending the CPOA National Convention Aug 25-29 held in Mobile. I will be fulfilling my duties as a Member of the CPOA Long Range Planning, Membership and CPO Academy Committees, and the Ad-hoc Committee Chairmen for the ED review.

I have included a list of some upcoming events.

If you have any questions or concerns, please call me.

                        Thank you,

                        Yours in Service,

                        Dave
