Southeastern Connecticut Chapter Chief Petty Officer’s Association

Spring 2003

Dear Chiefs,

As your chapter President, I would like to take this opportunity to bring you up to date on what’s happening.

The Chief Petty Officer’s Association is made up of Active, Retired and Reserve Chiefs. As of 2001, the new bylaws allow Chief Warrant Officers and Commissioned Officers who were once chiefs to also serve. (Once a Chief, always a Chief.) What makes a great chapter is when we have a good mix of current, former and retired Chiefs. One of my goals to ensure we have that mix, and to build a great chapter.

Elections of officers will be coming up soon. Being a Chapter Officer takes some your time, effort, and dedication. But the rewards you will reap from serving far outweigh some of the sacrifices you might have to make. We are looking for members to throw their hats in to the ring and be nominated. The four positions are President, Vice-President, Treasurer and Secretary. To nominate someone, you have to let us know your intentions be either e-mailing a Chapter Officer, or write to our chapter mailbox. You can nominate yourself, or someone else. But please, if you nominate someone other than yourself, make sure they will accept.

I am currently putting together a package for the “President’s Outstanding Chapter of the Year”, and sending it to National. We have placed third in the “Chapter of the Year” four out the past five years. This year, I want to go for the win. Our chapter is involved with many local and national charities and events. We are active volunteers in Special Olympics and Little League. We sponsor and present Cadet and OCS Awards, as well as provide awards to the Academy’s Enlisted Person of the Quarter and Enlisted Person of the Year. But I need your help. We need every CPOA members to document and report their community service effort, either as a group or individual. Deadline for submissions is July 1st.

Of course, a lot of our endeavors take money. Our Chapter’s only moneymaker is our hot dog concession at Cadet football games and Windjammers Marching Band Competition. We sell hot dogs, sodas, and other sundry items, but none of it works without the dedicated chiefs and their families who volunteer their time and hard work. This year, we will have five home games and Windjammers. We need about 10 chiefs, but the more the merrier. Please try to attend all or most of these events. Our busiest days at the concessions are Parents weekend, Homecoming and Windjammers, and that is when we could use the most help.  Even if you can only volunteer an hour or two, it all helps. So please try to attend all or most of the events.

The CPOA Convention for 2003 is 25-29 August. Mobile Chapter is hosting the Convention and sponsoring an Old Timers Picnic 30 August. Conventions are not only a great place to network, catch up with old friends, and have a good time, but it is also a wonderful learning experience. The picnic is great, too.
